[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Formatting beyond 1024 cylinders

kujanpa@ccu.umanitoba.ca (11/27/90)

Hi . Sorry if this has been covered on the net before.
The problem is that I'm trying to format a Microscience
80 meg MFM drive (model HH-1090) 5.25 HH as one 80 meg
partition and it doesn't want to work. I'm using DOS
4.01. It will only format to 60 meg. DiskManager is
included with the disk and it includes drivers etc. to
make it look like 80 meg. We want to avoid using any
sector translation, drivers etc. if possible. The problem
seems to be with the 1024 cylinder limitation of the BIOS.(?)

It is an AMI BIOS s/n 13 12 77, dated Friday, September 15,
1989. Is there any changes that can be made to the BIOS
that would overcome this barrier? Or is it just impossible
to format this drive at 80 meg without SWBIOS or something
similar?

Thanks in advance!
