[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Multiple Drives

cechew@bruce.cs.monash.OZ.AU (Earl Chew) (11/27/90)

I have a Miniscribe 8051A IDE drive running from a Miniscribe IDE controller
with floppy disk support. I have inherited a Rodime 3065 (ST506) drive which I
would like to use (though not necessarily with MSDOS). I have also inherited a
WD1003-WA2 controller.

I understand that the controller can be configured to use secondary port
addresses via jumpers E1-E2-E3 and E4-E5-E6.

The Rodime and WD configuration works satisfactorily if I remove the the
existing Miniscribe hardware:

                   Primary
		   +--------> Rodime
		   |
	WD1003-WA2 +--------> Floppies
		   Primary

I can boot either the Rodime or the floppy disk in this configuration with both
the floppy and hard disk at their primary ports. When the hard disk is
switched to the secondary port, I can no longer boot the hard disk, but can

                   Secondary
		   +--------> Rodime
		   |
	WD1003-WA2 +--------> Floppies
		   Primary

still boot the floppy. This is expected because the AMI BIOS doesn't look at
the secondary hard disk port --- right?

Now, re-installing the Miniscribe hardware:

                   Secondary
		   +--------> Rodime
		   |
	WD1003-WA2 +-------->
		   Secondary

                   Primary
		   +--------> Miniscribe
		   |
	Miniscribe +--------> Floppies
		   Primary

If I de-select all hard disks from the BIOS configuration menu, then I can boot
from floppy disk. If I select the Miniscribe hard disk from the BIOS
configuration menu, the boot process fails after accessing the floppy drives.
It appears to fail when reading the hard disk --- or it may have read junk off
the hard disk.

Can anyone:

1. tell me exactly what the E1-E2-E3 and E4-E5-E6 jumpers do on the WD1003-WA2
   controller board?

2. explain what is happening?

3. describe how to modify the WD1003-WA2 board so that it can be used with the
   IDE board?

4. tell me if the problem is due to the IRQ14 signal being driven by both
   boards?

Thanks in advance.

Earl
