I bought a SWAN sVGA card the other day with 512K. They wanted $50 more for the memory upgrade. This strikes me as being too high. I think I read in this group about 2 months ago that the going price is about $25 - $35. The SWAN card uses 256x4 ZIPP chips. I have no earthly idea what "ZIPP" means but SWAN says they get them from Tseng Labs. Many thanks to those who can help. BTW, if any of you have ftp access and are running 386/ix v2.0.2 or v2.2 I HIGHLY recommend Tom Roell's AWESOME x11r4 VGA server. It supports 800x600 with 256 colors and 1024 x 728 with 256 colors. The really neat thing about it is that if you are in 800x600x256 mode and have 1024K installed for the video memory then his server will use the extra 512K for virtual screen space. That is, when your cursor hits one of the screen edges, the entire screen workspace shifts in that direction. It's as if your screen is a window into a much larger one. I'm typing this message in an xterm window at home hooked up to the university through kermit and I still cannot get over the thrill of having a FREE x11r4 distribution complete with fonts, shared X libraries, includes and his incredible server (you need an ET4000 card). For those of you who have ftp access the IP number is [131.159.35.8]. The directory is /pub/i386/X11R4. For those of you who don't, I will be making an announcement on how you can get it FREE from me by U.S. Mail. I am in the last 2 weeks of my graduate studies for this semester and cannot do it now. However, in a couple of weeks, I'll be free to do the copying. Please e-mail me a note if you wish to get the distribution from me via SASE (absolutely NO CHARGES for my copying services, though) and I will make sure you get a the notice e-mailed to you so you don't miss the posting. ---------------------------------------- Steve Hite ...gatech!uflorida!unf7!shite -or- shite@sinkhole.unf.edu shite@wanda.unf.edu
