[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Building a 386?x system

goykhman_a@apollo.HP.COM (Alex Goykhman) (11/30/90)

Hi everybody,

I am seriously considering building a 386 system myself.
I do not expect to save any money, but rather to:

gain some valueable (to me) experience
get exactly the system I want
have some fun in the process

With that in mind I am looking for a book/video/magazine
article(s) that would guide me through the process
(I have no previous PC experience).
Could somebody recommend one?

Also, I am going to run both MSDOS and Unix, so I need
to choose the right motherbord. At this point compatibility
and reliability is more important to me than sheer performance.
There was a motherboard review in the April's Byte magazine,
but they mostly concentrated on performance and components.

Having read the latest issue of the Computer Shopper,
I can name five brand name motherboards that the PC "manufacturers"
love to show off:

AMI, Micronics, Mylex, DTK, Orchid, DTK

Could somebody review them in terms of compatibility/reliability?
Are there any others that should be considered?

Thanks in advance,

Alex Goykhman

Well I would consider the AMI alternative the best. They build the board and
they wrote the BIOS, and I've heard people have the fewest problems with this
board. I'm going to build a 386/33 and I can get the AMI Mark VI Screamer
for $1225.00.

I've heard the DTK is the worst. All kinds of BIOS problems.

Mirconics wouldn't be too bad, they do use the AMI bios.
