[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Convergence problem on a Sony 1303

yeung@Software.Mitel.COM (Alvin Yeung) (11/30/90)

I have a Sony 1303 monitor and it has a convergence problem.
Worst, the misconvergence of the three color beams only
happen on the bottom half of the screen.

I opened it up and found a trim pot at the rear of the monitor
which when turned, seemed to shift the three beams together and
apart horiziontally. This pot is labelled 'H.stat' on the
circuit board.

Adjusting with this pot did not cure the convergence because
when adjusted for perfect convergence on the bottom half, the
top half goes out.

I failed to find a pot which was labelled 'V.stat', so that
I can use it to adjust the vertical convergence.

I had called the local Sony service center and it only
handles TVs and other consumer electronics, not the 1303.
It recommended a another local shop which services what it
termed 'industrial' monitors. This shop charges $50 up front
for just an estimate.

I don't mind paying the money to get my monitor fixed, but
I have a little doubt whether the shop here can fix the 1303
because itself, too, is another consumer electronics store.
Also, when I talked to its service person on the phone, it
sounded like he has never heard about the 1303. Mmmmm...

Before I entrust my monitor and $50 to these guys, I like to
know if somebody on the net has any ideas for my monitor's
mis-covergence. The solution may turn out to be
trivial.

Alvin.

This may not be an adjustment problem. If the monitor uses a push-pull
output for the vertical deflection (likely) and one of the two transistors
goes out (possible) you could get symptoms like this.
