I just got my Gateway 2000 386sx system two weeks ago. I ordered
it with the ATI 512k graphics card. I have a couple of questions...
First of all, I've been having a problem using the 800x600
ATI-supplied driver for Windows. When the machine is cold, (i.e. just
turned on) Windows loses its vertical sync with this driver installed.
After a couple of minutes, it stops and works fine. The other drivers
(1024x768 and 640x400) don't have this problem, they work fine all
the time. I don't know if its the driver, the card, or the monitor.
Anyone else had this problem?
Second, Gateway switched to the Diamond Speedstar graphics card
right after they shipped my machine. I can switch cards for free
if I do so within the 30 day grace period. Supposedly, this card
is faster. It comes standard with 512k and is expandable to 1M.
Is this a good card and more importantly, is it widely
supported? It would be a big bummer if I couldn't get my stuff
to work with it (especially games and shareware, I know they'll have
the important drivers included with the card.)
Time is of the essence here because I only have another week
or so to decide.
My experience with Gateway has been very positive, I would heartily
recommend them to anyone considering buying a clone.
BTW, my Norton 5.0 SI was around 11.6, anyone care to tell me if
this is good.
Thanks in advance,
Mark
