In regards to your Com port problem;

What address and Interrupts did you set your serial ports to?  Address's
2E8, 2F8, 3E8, 3F8 AND IRQ3, 4, 5 ARE Generally usuable.  If you didn't get any documentation with your I/O card, then I'd call them.  Also your Modem may have
the capability of being set to another Address, IRQ.  Your system boot diag
usually will show what address's for COM and PAR are being used. Just make sure
 each Address has a unique IRQ.
