[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Fax/Modem Cards

swb@chumley.tn.cornell.edu (Scott Brim) (11/25/90)

While we're on the subject, I have a very related question. I have a
glossy about a board from CompuCom. "SpeedModem Combo (tm)" ...
"World-Class 9,6000 bps DIS-Modem(tm) and Fax, all at a breakthrough
price - $279." DIS compression gives about a 4:1 ration (MNP about
2:1), they say. Anyway, it looks pretty good on paper, but I'd like any
opinions anyone can give me about this board, how well it does on FAX
(and on managing received images), how good their support for their
products is, are they close to bankruptcy, etc.
						Thanks a lot ... Scott

Here are the responses I got to my request for information on Fax cards
that also work as modems.

David,

You might want to ask Intel's Personal Computer Enhancement Operation (PCEO)
about their SatisFAXion board. It seems to me that it's a 9600 baud fax
machine with a 2400 baud error correcting modem. Price is somewhere around
$500 dollars, plus there's supposed to be a software deal.

For real info (I don't belong to the group), call 1-800-538-3373. I think the
menu code would be 2,2, but you'll probably want to listen for changes.

Good luck, and greetings from the Rocking Metropolis.

In comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware you write:

>I am interested in buying a modem which could act as a fax board also.
>Requirements include at least 2400 baud modem, at least 4800 baud send/receive
>fax transmission and obiously I would like to keep the price down.
>...
>Anyone have any suggestions?

It just so happens that I have a similar interest. There is a company called
CompuCom in Sunnyvale, CA which makes a modem which fits your bill very
nicely. The modem is called "Speedmodem Combo" and does 300-2400 Bell/CCITT
with MNP5, it does a proprietary protocol at up to 9600bps - they claim to
have a protocol driver which will produce an effective transfer rate of up
to 38,400 bps, but I haven't seen it, yet. It also does 9600 bps send/receive
CCITT Group III fax.

The price, you ask? $279.00. I've seen two of them running, up to 2400 bps
in modem mode is as solid as any other modem I have had the opportunity to
use. The FAX works just dandy. The 9600bps mode still has a few bugs, but
does work.

CompuCom can be reached at (408)732-4500 by voice or at (408)732-4570 by FAX.

I'm getting ready to order one for myself....

Good luck with your search.

In addition I found a board by Everex which does 2400 baud modem and 9600
baud Send/Receive Fax. The price was ~$300 for the external version and
~$250 for the internal version. I still haven't purchased any yet. Hope
this is a help to someone.
