[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] HD controller query

Greetings... I am starting to think about a new HD & controller, possibly
for a new (non-XTclone) machine, and I'd like some comparative information.

I gather that IDE means most of the controller is on the HD, with some
minimal adapter on a 16-bit AT bus.  How does it compare in performance
to a 16-bit SCSI controller?  How about an 8-bit SCSI controller?  (I was
surprised to learn that such exist; I thought an 8-bit bus was supposed to
be too limiting for SCSI's performance.)

And how does ESDI compare to these, for that matter?

All information appreciated.  If I get significant email, I'll post a
summary.  (If there's an FAQ answer to this or an archived fact file,
pointers to same will also be appreciated.)
