[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] SCSI controller specs?

kenyee@ksr.com (Ken Yee) (12/21/90)

If anyone out there has bought an Adaptec 1542B SCSI controller recently,
could you PLEASE send me a message with the specs from the back of
the manual? I want to compare it to the WD7000FASST controller

This is what I found from the back of the WD7000FASST2 manual:

	- WD33C93A SCSI chip; Z80 used as SCSI command processor
	- up to 16 Mbyte block size transfers
	- 16 byte FIFO on AT bus
	- full SCSI command set; CDROM and WORM supported
	- disconnect/reconnect arbitration
	- up to 64 logical devices
	- linked SCSI commands (important for multitasking O.S. like Unix)
	- multiple WD controllers supported in same system
	- 4.0 Mbytes/sec sync speed
	- 2.0 Mbytes/sec async speed
	- 5.3 Mbytes/sec host transfer rate
	- first-party bus mastering DMA transfer
	- Extended memory buffer up to 64Kbytes (for 386 mode programs)
	- Pre-fetch buffer up to 64K
	- Buffered writes possible
	- up to 30 multiple bootable partitions
	- Logical partitions can "span" multiple drives
There are also three "kludges" on the board (if you see wires on the board,
the board was "fixed" after it was built).

This is interesting, but since you mention unix, check what your unix
vendors support. Most support using the multithreading on the Adaptek,
some support the WD.

Both are good controllers, most unix vendors seem to support the Adaptek.
