My old but venerable XT clone, with 32 MB RLL drive was getting full (the drive was), so I found a 40 MB MFM drive, and got a Western Digital Gen2 plus to drive it. If I set the Gen2 to Bios address to ca00, I can low level format, but not fdisk the drive. I took the drive and card to a friend's machine and had no trouble formating it. Now, if I remove the RLL drive, and set the MFM bios to c800, it will be drive C, but of course I want BOTH drives to run. So here are two questions: 1) WHY? My best guess is that the RLL's Bios is larger than 200 (hex). Is this possible? The RLL driver is an Adaptec 408100H BIOS 1987 411503-00A. If so, does anyone know the jumper settings to move the address up? 2) And why can't I access the Gen2 card at an address higher than ca00? I tried both cc00 and ce00, and no luck. Is this an XT limit? Post a response or mail to me, I doubt this is of general interest, but I'll summerize if anyone else wants to know.
