The hardware: OMTI 5510-3 controller & LaPine Titan 3532 3&1/2 disk drive called an SVC (Silicon Valley Computer?) Gold Card in a 5-slot IBMPC. Failure mode: "diskwatch" TSR reports a "no response" error; the hard disk just "goes away" after working for a short while, with the rest of the system fully functional. This problem started as an occassional occurrence that the Mace "format with data in place" utility would fix for awhile. Also, powering down, then up would bring disk back online sometimes. Ctrl+alt+del never got it back online. The deterioration has taken some 2 yrs of light use. It's happening too often now; gotta fix something. The question is, is it the disk or controller? Which should I replace, & with what? Or would it be easier to just junk the whole thing?
