[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Power supplies and dram

ERSHC@CUNYVM (01/06/91)

Although everyone who responded to my previous query (is 150 W enough
for an XT with 2 disks) said YES, after running 24 hours I turned
the machine off and could not turn it on. The power supply was DEAD.
I got another (also 150 W, I couldn't find 200 W locally) and could not
get the machine up. Funny crashes. I thought perhaps the new PS was
bad (occasionally a crash during boot, sometimes in the middle of a dir,
sometimes elsewhere, always the machine froze, keybd locked out, but the
screen not blank). Took the PS back and got another. Same problems.
Stripped the motherboard, took the 8088 to a friend, it worked.
Stripped the RAM, all boards etc. and started to replace one at a
time to see what was bad. By the time everything was reinstalled,
everything was fine. EXCEPT...Checkit (a diagnostic utility)
says everthing is OK except during the Long RAM check the machine will
occasionally freeze, either with a blank screen or with the flashing ??
but not going anywhere for 15 - 20 mins.

Before I replace all my DRAM, anyone got any good (or bad) ideas?

Thanks.
