Some time ago, I was having problems with my VGA monitor/card compatability. I'm using a LOOP brand monitor (1024x768 max) and a SWAN brand 1M card (1024x768x256 max). The card was advertised as being able to handle anything I could give it up to the forementioned maximum. I ran into problems when I gave it anything in the 800x600 modes (16 & 256 color). The 1024x768 modes worked fine, but if I so much as entered an 800x600 mode, I would see a bright flash of light on the screen, accompanied by sound effects within the monitor itself (fizzing and popping). Not nice. I posted a summary of this problem a few months ago, but all I really found out was that a) I'm not the only one with the problem, and b) The problem had to do with the scanning frequency. Well I'm happy to say that I am now able to use the 800x600 modes quite nicely, thanks to the implementation of a small (<10K), little-doc- umented program that can be used to easily switch to damn near any video mode. I set the mode to "35K", and everything is working fine. The program was on one of the SWAN disks that came with the card, but searching through the program revealed no signature of ownership or copyright. If anyone wants a uuencoded copy of this program (titled VMODE.COM) I'd be happy to send i, unless I head from a SWAN representative/lawyer/hit- man. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Neal Miller | "Why not go mad?" | millernw@clutx.clarkson.edu Clarkson University | - Ford Prefect | millernw@clutx.bitnet ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
