[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Wanted: Optical Card Reader leads II

cepek@vixvax.mgi.com (01/07/91)

Thanks to all who've responded. So far, I've heard of ScanPro (in
Minneapolis, MN, my backyard!), Scantron, and NCS (National Computer
Systems). Someone also suggested using a flatbed scanner and writing
the (relatively straightforward) pattern recognition software.

I have yet to contact the above places (hey, it's only 8 am), but I
wanted to summarize the results so far and clarify my original post
a bit.

My goal is to add this "reader" to a simple PC set-up; an important
goal here is a low price (yet not cheap, as in shoddy, of course :-).
I was hoping for something basic and simple for under $500, but maybe
it just isn't out there. But maybe it is, hence my query.

Someone thought I might have been referring to the old 80-column cards
where you fill in the ovals. Well, if it works, I'm interested. But
"surplus store shopping" isn't my intention; I'd like to make contact
with a vendor who is actively manufacturing this (alleged) product,
for service, technical assistance, and possible future quantity
purchase reasons.

If anyone has any other leads, suggestions, or ideas beyond the above,
please fill me in. Thanks.
