[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Stay away from Microlab!

ERSHC@CUNYVM (12/30/90)

I receintly ordered a hard disk controler and cables for same
from Microlab. I received the card and a floppy controler cable.
I called there customer (dis)service number (A TOLL CALL) and,
after spending a total of 15 minutes on hold, was cut off.
I called again, spent another 20 minutes on hold, and, after
explaining the problem, was givin the option of ordering the
correct cables and having them shipped, and then returning
the cable I got, or shipping the cable I got and then getting
the correct ones. As the first option seemed faster, that is
what I chose. The Service Guy couldn't issue an RMA number,
but said I would be called back by someone with an RMA.

I never got called back (over a two week wait), and I never received
the cables. I sent a certifyed RRR letter (and have received the
return recipt), and have yet to hear from them.

I won't order from them again, I suggest the same for you.

Fore warned is fore armed!

You might want to clarify exactly which "Microlab" you are talking about
by giving the company's location, etc., or you may confuse people with
one of several other companies with very similar names.

Yes, I should have.
Microlab, Framington Hills MI, phn 800-677-7900

I should point out that after that post I received a phone call and conferming
letter stating that they would ship the correct cables to me at no cost.
I was going to post that when the cables arrived, but they haven't yet.

Cavaet Emptor (or however it's spelled)

I just purchased a Microlab 368sx package and was quite pleased with two
exceptions.

      1. The printer cable arrived with two broken pins. Luckly I could
borrow one from a friend until I could ship back the broken one.

      2. They advertised a game card with the package but when the computer
arrived It did not have one. I must give the Tech. support guy credit
because he turned himself inside out to find out why. They had a deal with
a supplier to provide the motherboard and game card and during the xmas rush
thier supplier ran out so the "upgraded" me to the next motherboard but did
not include any info to tell me this.

I think they are like any other company. There only as good as there
employees and being human we all make stupid mistakes.

Well, I have to defend microlab. I think either you had a rare bad experience,
or I had a rare good experience (I cant say which :). I ordered a Toshiba
high density disk drive from them a few months ago, and they got the thing here
in 4 days. For christmas, my friend ordered some things from them for his
father's AT machine, and he also has no complaints.

In offense to microlab, the salesperson I talked with wanted to make me feel
like she was miss high and mighty computer goddess or something. While she
was rumaging around looking for the drive's price, she asked me what disk
controller I had, so I told her. She then says "Really???? What kind of
machine to you have?" I told her I had a 386. IN an instant she was all
over me trying to sell me a new controller card. She insisted my card was
an 8bit card. Thats kinda funny since it has a 2 segment card edge connecter
and wont fit in an 8bit slot eh? :)

That's funny, I ordered an ATI card from Microlab this summer and got
prompt, courteous, no hassles service. Perhaps this was just an anomly?

Strange. Now that the location of the Microlab that someone had such
a bad experience with has been posted, I recall that I dealt with them
for a small piece of equipment. The fellow I spoke to said that I could
get what I needed from them, but that it would be as part of a kit that
would cost me about $20. He also said that they throw away piles of
them in system configurations, and therefore have lots of extras... and
he proceeded to meet me after work and give me one for free. It is a
shame that the company as a whole isn't as nice as that particular
employee was.
sigh.

I missed the original posting, but I've ordered from Microlab twice in the
last couple of months and had exact delivery within a week. (of course, it
doesn't even take the post office long to get from Ohio to Indiana...)
