[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] VGA card & Extended Memory

jim@aeshq.UUCP (jim) (01/17/91)

A friend of mine has a problem which I couldn't figure out (not that I'm
supposed to be able to figure it out), so I'm posting to see if anyone
has any suggestions...

He has recently upgraded from Hercules to SVGA on his AT Compatable at
home. The VGA card and Monitor work fine with one exception. With the VGA
card in, his Intel 2 Meg Above Board 286 won't initialize; freezing the
machine.

On start-up all goes well and his 640K + 384K Conventional and Expanded
Memory count off just fine. When the machine boots and reaches the line in
his config.sys which tells it to initialize the 2 Meg Extended Memory it
just freezes. It didn't do this before the addition of the VGA card.

Booting off floppy works fine as the Above Board initialization isn't in the
floppy's config.sys.

Any ideas?

The hardware consists of :
AT compatable with 1 Meg on Board.
Intel Above board 286 (2 Megs memory)
Fugikama VGA Card with Trident Chipset (512K)
The extra memory on the card allows 1024x768@16 colours
Amazing VGA Monitor (don't know model name)

Note: The VGA card was upgraded from 256K to 512K for his desired
resolution (if that makes any difference).

Any suggestions appreciated,

  Jim Roberts
