Hey Dudes (and Dudets), This is a cry for help, well not as much a cry as a whine. OK all you HP employees. It seems that HP is hell bent on telling you just what you need to know when they write their manuals. Well here is something that I want to know. I am a software type person, but lately I've been adding on to my Vectra and have noticed some DIP switches and empty chip sockets that have no referance what so ever in the manuals that came with the computer. So what do the switches do and are the empty sockets for memory (just a wild guess)? If they arn't for anything why are they there? And while you're at it, if anyone has accidentally stumbled upon the meaning of life, please E-mail it to me too. Thanks Much, Nick Stefanisko stefanis@cscihp.ecst.csuchioc.edu PS If you know of any one else out there with the last name of Stefanisko, let them know about their cousin in California.

As a software person you obvious do not need to know about hardware. :-) The switches are used with various hardware accessories such as the 80287 coprocessor. If you buy them you should get documentation on what the switch settings should be. If you insist on knowing more :-), you can buy the hardware technical reference manual (5061-8982) which will explain down to pin level what the switches do. I do not know the meaning of life but I do know the answer is 42.
