[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Recommendation on ET4000 Super VGA card needed

hns@regent.e-technik.tu-muenchen.dbp.de (Henning Spruth) (01/14/91)

Hello,

I'm currently looking for a Super VGA card. I have an 80386/25 MHz
with a NEC 3D monitor.

The cards based on the ET 4000 seem to be not too bad. Who as
any experience with this product? Particularly, I would like to
know

- if there exist OS/2 drivers for these cards

- how compatible various brands of ET4000-cards are with another

- how they compare in speed to other upper-range VGA cards (e.g.
  Video 7 etc.)

Please post your replys or mail them to

I'm selling those ET4000-SVGA cards.
They're currently at about DM 298 w/ 1 MB video RAM.

There're two major versions on the market today:
-- cards based on the orginal TSENG-LABs ET4000 chip
-- cards based on the faster (!) TRIDENT 8900 chip

Watch out when buying ET-4000 cards, 1990 versions *do* come with
high-resolution drivers for WINDOWS 3.0, but they *don't* work
in the 386-enhanced mode !
The updated version should cause no more trouble -- so far...

No problems ocurred in WINDOWS 3.0 with the TRIDENT-versions, yet.

OS/2 should work with most cards.
UNIX-systems (e.g. SCO) cause many many trouble in enhanced VGA-modes...

That's all about my experiences.
I'm personally using GENOA-6000 cards. The model 6400-A provides
flickerfree 70Hz screens even with resolutions up to 1024x768.
I think, this is more worth than 256 colours...

...and remember: WINDOWS 3.0 uses the 256 colours *only* on it's
title screen...:-)))))

I got a SWAN board, 1MB and ET4000 chipset. It was $199, and available
in interlace or not at your pleasure. Runs perfectly under DOS, I'm
still checking with UNIX.
