Just got a flyer from PC House, and one of the items they have is a "80 data" 486/25 motherboard. With 4MB/8K cache it's $1490, and $190 for another 1208K of cache. They also want $49.50 for 1MB SIPs. Has anyone heard of these folks, or of that motherboard? Are these prices reasonable/too good to be true? -- _ Kevin D. I assume you meant to say 128K additional cache. The price for the SIPs seems reasonable. | James M. VandeVegt | University of Nebraska | I have ran across several 80-Data machines, most of them have been a lot of trouble. There was one 386/20 with a 16mhz CPU, another one had the BIOS and DRAM chips with pins not in the sockets, and I have a 286/10 here that refuses to boot (something wrong with the DMA). Out of the hundreds of machines I have delt with this past year, I have found 5 dead 80-Data's 1 dead PS/2-70 motherboard 1 dead Sperry (mitsubisi, or however you spell it) 1 DOA Top Microsystems 386sx and no dead DTK's (and I see more of these than anything else). Given that track record, I would not buy 80-Data. I have also not had great luck with any 386sx's for some reason but I dont know why (I have used about 10 in the past three months). It takes SIPPs and not SIMMs? -scott

Ad says "25 MHz 486 Mother Board / Intel 80486-25 CPU / AMI BIOS w/Set- up / Self-contained Co-processor & 8KB cache / 4 Memory banks for 8MB SIP / MB84 with 4MB $1490 (1-3) $1425 (4+) / 128KB Cache Memory Board MB89 $190 (1-3) $175 (4+)". I called them, it does include the CPU. They do not have any available at this time because they're having trouble getting CPUs. Hmm. Maybe I should have posted to sci.skeptic. 8-{)} -- _ Kevin D. Two months ago I paid $450 for the 486 (B5) to plug into my MB. Why pay more? If someone is charging $1000 for a 486, then someone's making an enormous markup. -- Kaleb Keithley kaleb@thyme.jpl.nasa.gov As of right now, I'm in charge here now... Alexander Haig.
