[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Video Card and Hard Drive Question

doukas@hart.Princeton.EDU (Dimitris Doukas) (01/25/91)

I have the following question for you:
I am going to buy a 486-25MHz computer. Gateway2000 offers a good deal.
The question refers to the video card and the hard drive. GW offers
the "diamond SpeedStar" with 1Mb which they say outperforms every other
brand name card. I had in mind to by the Orchid Prodesigner II 1024 x 768.
Could anyone tell me if he/she had an experience with the diamond SpeedStar
and in particular point out any well known incompatibilities (I am interested to
run UNIX)? They also offer a WD 200MB 15ms IDE hard drive, but i am for a
Conner 3204 200Mb IDE. Do you have any comments on that?

Thanks a lot,
--Dimitris
PS: They charge 150$ for the Diamond and 700$ for the WD HD.

I have one. It is fast, but haven't done anything strange with yet (or run
UNIX). The Windows drivers seem good (1024x768x256 is a little small).

They have at least two 200Mb drives: Maxtor and Western Digital. I was told
I would get the Maxtor, but they sent me the WD. I was unaware they even make
hard drives, and I wanted the Maxtor, so I had Gateway replace it. (Also, the
WD drive was much noisier.) I like the Maxtor. No info on the Connor.
