[This is a repeat.... post 1 seems to have been swallowed by the bl....] I've got a good deal on an old Compaq Deskpro 386, Model 2570. It has a 16 MHz 386DX with a 10MHz 287, 4 storage bays: 1. & 2. - Full-Ht, 71Mb CDC 94155-86 3. - 1.2Mb 5-1/4" Floppy 4. - 40 Mb Tape Backup (DC2000 cartridge) and 8 slots: 1. Memory Board - 2 Mb 2. Hayes JT Fax 2400 3. Kraft Game Card 4. CompuADD Hi-rez SVGA (1Mb Video Ram, 1024x768@256) 5. 2400 bps MNP5 Internal Modem 6. Western Digital WD1002-WAH Controller for Hard disk 7. Multi-function Card (Floppy/Tape/1 serial/1 parallel) 8. Hand scanner card. It's a pretty full system, but it has 4 particular problems (in priority): 1. 71 Mb is not nearly enough disk space. 2. Big Autocad and Lotus applications require 4-6 Mb of memory. 3. Lack of a 3.5", 1.44Mb disk is needed. 4. Processor speed is a tad slow for big number crunchers. So, I need to upgrade, the question is how? Can I upgrade to a faster processor? will the WD1002-WAH support a bigger (and faster) hard drive externally (I'd like to keep the 71Mb as a second drive)? Can I add an external HD AND an external 1.44Mb FD? Can I replace the Memory board with and 8 Mb variety?..... There you have it.... I'm calling on the collective wisdom of the net for suggestions.... Thanx in advance.. -ed cetron@cc.utah.edu 801-355-9110 (Ma Bell if post/mail fail...)
