I am going to spend a week in Calgary visiting some friends there for the
first time. Does anyone have any suggestions of things that I should or
should not see while I am out there? Is there anything about the airports
or Air Canada Airlines that I should watch out for? Any good places
for day hikes, canoeing/swimming in the area? Please send me mail if
you have any info. thanks.

p.s. I do know about the Calgary Stampede, but unfortunately, I will be
arriving after it is over.

You MUST get out to Jasper - or is it Banff in that region? They are connecting
parks. (Actually, there is a third park in the system.) The Canadian Rockies
in that area are about the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen.

If you like camping, there are great places to camp there, too.

If I remember right, it's about a 3 hour drive from Calgary.

The three parks in the Canadian Rockies are Banff, Jasper
and Yoho. There are other parks near-by. Banff is the more
built up and touristy. Jasper is down-right beautiful.
I just spent three nights in Chateau Lake Louise, an old
Canadian Pacific Resort. It was the week before the season
started, so it was $50/night (canadian, so ~~ $40 US$) and
had a wonderful time. Food in Banff is excellent, and was
very inexpensive. There were actually restaurants there that
had LOWERED their prices, and combined with the exchange rate,
were a great deal. Lots of places to hike to, especially
near Lake Louise and up towards Jasper. Columbia icefields
is interesting. If you have never hiked across a glacier...

The Colombia Icefields Parkway is the highway that runs between Banff and
Jasper...

You could spend weeks exploring the many beautiful and dramatic
trails that leave the highway.

PLAN to backpack, car-camp, or "motor-tour"
that stretch of land... you won't regret it!
