[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] IDE drives and interface boards

nee@cf_su14.Sbi.Com (Robert Nee) (02/07/91)

I am considering purchasing an IDE drive and adapter board soon.
I need the adapter because my computer does not support IDE drives
on the motherboard. First however I have some questions for people
who have the same setup I am considering.

1) Does the adapter board (that you have) have it's own ROM? If
   so :

   a) Is the address of this ROM user selectable to prevent
conflicts with other adapters and ROMS?

   b) Does this ROM patch the BIOS drive table so that the drive
can be recognized without needing device drivers and such.

2) Are any drivers needed at all in order to make the drive work?

3) Assuming I plan to use MS-DOS 4.01 do I need anything else in
order to make the drive work? Extra partitioning software?

You may mail me to prevent net clutter. If the answers I receive
are interesting or controversial enough I will post a summary of
the replies to the net.

Thanks in advance.
