[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] EPS: Optiquest and Quantum?

sgreen@umiami.ir.miami.edu (02/08/91)

I purchased an EPS 386SX-16 in November and am overwhelmingly pleased with it
and their service. For example, when they came out with their 386SX-20 three
weeks after my 16MHz one arrived, one call produced an instant and gracious
offer of a freebie upgrade. They came through on it by FedExing me the new
motherboard as soon as I was ready for it and their telephone tech support
helped solve some mysterious and unrecoverable hard disc crashes that had me
baffled. (I am not a novice, but it was my first time using caching HD
controllers and LIM 4.0 memory which turned out to be the problem when using
WordPerfect 5.1.) I had elected EPS based on the quality of parts for the
price and also the comments in this section. So far this is all good news,
right? My question is whether they continue to offer good value, specifically,
has anyone purchased a system in the last month or so?

They have replaced their standard SONY 1304 monitor with an OEM from ACER and
their first level upgrade from that is an Optiquest 2000 (15" flat Toshiba
screen with 0.28 dot pitch). They continue to use the Orchid ProDesigner II
video card. In the ca. 100Meg hard drive range, they have
replaced their NEC ESDI using the Adaptec caching controller with a Quantum
drive 32K cache, Maxtor IDE controller. Both of these changes have permitted
them to lower prices, but I know little or nothing about this hardware.

Any recent buyers from EPS? Any owners of this monitor or hard drive?

I plan to buy a DX386-25 or -33 and a 486-25 soon (not MY money) and would
appreciate any info from users/owners.
If you E-mail me directly, I will summarize and post replies. Thanx - Steve
