[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Jumpers for Seagate ST-251??

jeffrey@sci.ccny.cuny.edu (Jeffrey L Bromberger) (02/05/91)

I just inherited a used Seagate ST-251 without documentation. Could
someone out there please tell me what the different jumpers mean?
There are 8 sets on the rear, just between the 20 pin and 34 pin
cables. Any help would be appreciated! Please mail any relevant
info, and I'll post a summary if needed.

The first four jumpers are Drive Select jumpers. The rest are reserved
for Factory use. I know that one of them is for selftest but I forget
which one. The only ones you should care about are DS1 and DS2.

The jumper closest to the 20 pin connector (data) is DS1. The next is
DS2.

If your control cable (the 34 pin cable) has a twist in it between the
connectors for the two drives, the DS2 position should be used. Your
first disc should be at the end of the cable. The second disc should
be at the connector in the middle of the cable. The second disc should
be selected to DS2 also.

If your control cable doesn't have a twist in it or if your control cable
will only connect to one drive, use the DS1 position for the one drive
or both drives if you have two.

The drive at the end of the cable should have the terminating resistor
pack installed. This is on the bottom of the drive and plugs into a
little socket. If you have a second drive, the resistor pack needs to
be removed. (Remember which way it went it in case you ever want to
install it again!)

Hope this helps.
