[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] What is "pitch" on a CRT / moire` patterns

O.K., now we all know what dot pitch is (distance between the discrete
displayable dots on the physical screen), and what resolution is,
as in 640 by 480 (the number of pixels on the screen, determined by
the video interface).

Question: How do these two interract. Surely if the pixels on the
video signal do not line up with the dots in the phosphor mask,
there will be visible moire` patterns on the screen (moire` patterns
are visual "hetrodyning" between two overlapping repetitive patterns).

Is there special electronics in the monitor to line the pixels up
with the mask? (wow - that sounds like a difficult problem!)
Or is it just not an issue, and it works well enough without
special alignment?
