[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Conner 500meg IDE $800-- Rumor or Fact??

goat@ucscb.UCSC.EDU (Glendower, goat of goats) (02/14/91)

...I keep hearing about how Connor Peripherals will unleash a (roughly) 500
megabyte IDE drive (3 1/2 inch?) for the same price as their comparable
200 megabyte drive... around 800 dollars. That's only $1.60 per meg!!!!!

...First, is this true? I have heard it in so many places....

Second, how do I get one (or get in line for one?)

I think your talking about the CP-3500/3504. It is a 510MB hard disk drive
and has a suggested list price of $1,295.00.

I ask about this on the net about 3/4 months ago, someone called Conner and
asked them about the drive. They said it would be ready in about 6 months.
I guess maybe they are a little ahead of schedule.

You can call Conner Peripherals at (408) 456-4500.

Parts of the rumors are correct. Conner will be introducing the CP-3500
(SCSI version) and the CP-3504 (IDE version) this summer. However, my
contact in Conner marketing says that they haven't nailed down the exact
pricing yet and isn't hinting where it might fall. They are aware of the
market so will be realistic. Its general specs are: 510Mb formatted, 12ms
avg, 256kb look ahead buffer, 4.5W (!), 2.3 Lbs. Contact your local Anthem
(800-359-3502) or Avnet (800-531-3387) distributer to get on the waiting
list. Brochures are already available.

In comparison, the CP3200 (200 meg) SCSI version lists currently for $1135,
but deals can be found in the $700-800 range or maybe better if you look
hard. The cost to the dealers was JUST reduced, probably in preparation for
the CP-3500 intro. Conner may also put out a 300+ meg depopulated version of
the 3500 for the in-between market.

Hope that helps.

This drive was announced at Comdex. It does not yet seem to have made
its way into distribution. (It may not be shipping yet.) The price Conner
quoted was $1295 quantity one. I don't know how this translates to mail-order
street pricing. Can anybody else speak authoritatively to this?

If I recall correctly the Conner was spec'ed at 12 msec average access
time and has a 256K internal buffer (IDE at least) with smarter management
algorithms than the current models. Sounds like a winner.

BTW, Conner doesn't have an exclusive here (although their pricing is
more aggresive than some others). HP, Rodime, Quantum, Fujitsu, etc., have an-
nounced similar drives. See the current issue (4 Feb 91) of EDN ( a trade
mag for EEs) for a quick overview of these new drives.
