[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Problem with VGA monitor and card.

u1052@jsp.umontreal.ca (Riendeau Nicolas) (02/20/91)

      I have a TTX 3436 (multiscanning 1024x768 interlaced 0.28mm dot
pitch) monitor. My video card is based on the Tseng ET4000. I have two
problems which I believe are not related.

My TTX 3436 sometimes has an unstable scan line (in text and
graphics modes. The entire lineshifts to the right by what I believe
is probably 2-3 pixels and then goes back to its original position
and repeat this for an undeterminated period of time) and the only
solution I found to this problem is to de-center the picture (but
even then I think that it only changes the position of the line that
shifts). This appears to be a problem with that model because somebody
else who has the same model also has that problem (but it looks like on
its monitor it's a little less apparent). It looks like in the U.S. that
monitor is sold under the name CTX 3436 (same specs, same look and proba-
bly the same problem). I have tried turning on or off the AUTO switch
with SOMETIMES good results. Apart from that problem I am quite satisfied
with my monitor but I would probably hesitate to recommend it to someone
else. The problem is not with the video card because we tried a VGA WONDER,
a Tseng ET4000 based and a PARADISE based card with the same results.

Does somebody know if there is some kind of fix for that problem?
(My monitor is still under warranty). Are CTX and TTX the same company?
Does somebody know the address and/or phone number of TTX (or CTX if they
are indeed the same company.)?

The other problem I have seems to be a bug in the bios of my ET4000
based card (The bios of my computer is an Award 286 Version 3.03Z). The
"Save/Restore Video State" call does not seem to work properly (at least
with a program called VGATEST). The BIOS call doesn't seem to save enough
information to restore the screen to its saved state (wrong video mode,
etc...). If the hardware of the card itself has any incompatibilities with
the VGA standard at least its bios should be compatible with it. My card
appears to be some kind of OEM card (I'm not sure about the name of the card
but it think it's MEGA-EVA/1024 (sorry I forgot my manual at home)) that
comes with 1 meg of RAM. The only companies mentioned in the manual are TSENG
LABS (USA) and TSENG something... The card has a VGA SYNC bios that's supposed
to give more compatibility. The card appears to be quite new (I believe the
bios is dated september 1990).

The only company I can turn to about that bug in the bios appears to
be TSENG LABS (USA), does somebody know their address?

Please respond via email.

Thanks!
