[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] PS/2 mod 30 Hard Drive fails with extra VGA

gsm@gsm001.uucp (Geoffrey S. Mendelson) (02/20/91)

I have a friend with a PS/2 model 30. He added an extra VGA. It works fine,
disabling the internal video. When he added an IBM drive (removed from a
PS/2 30/286) the hard drive will not write reliably. Most of the time, it
trashes itself on the first write.

If he removes the VGA, the drive works fine.

The VGA is a "generic" 8/16bit (autoswitching) with 512k.

He thought it might be a power problem, so he replaced his stock power
supply with a clone 200 watt unit. The same problem occcurs.

So to summarize:

P.S. 2 Model 30

    W extra VGA, 2 floppies....................works fine.
    W hard drive, 1 floppy.....................works fine.
W VGA, hard drive, 1 floppy................Hard drive fails writes.
W VGA, hard drive, 1 floppy, 200w p.s......Hard drive fails.

Please respond via email as this group is not delivered here.

Thanks, Geoff.
