[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Super Vga memory problem HELP!!!

cgaeth@amsaa-cleo.brl.mil (Christopher Gaeth) (02/20/91)

Hello,
I seem to be having some problems with my system. I have a microlab
386sx-16 with a mathcopro (norton si reports it a a 80287 when I know it
should be a 80387sx-16,Why ??), game port, 65 meg hard drive, 2 meg memory,
and a GTK super vga card. I belive this card is setup to emulate a Paradise
Vga card.
The problem started when I noticed that my vga card only had 256k of
memory when it was supposed to have 512k. Microlab shipped the correct chips
(I called tech support and verified this) but when I installed them the board
refuses to recgonize the addtional memory. The manual is sketchy at best and
says that the card will automaticlly know that it has 512 on board. If I run
Norton Si it identifies the card as "Enhanced graphics, 256k". I can
configure windows 3.0 to 640X480, 256 colors but when I do any thing it with
it the computer locks up. If I choose just standard vga mode for windows
everything runs fine. So right know I'm lost. I could pull the card and
send it back to Microlab for them to test but that would leave me with out
a pc for a week or so. If any body has any advice please post or e-mail to
me.

Seeing 256k is normal for Norton SI. It only recognizes 256k of video ram
whether you have 512k or 1024k. However it should note the VGA instead of EGA.
I say this is a fact since I spoke to a norton tech support person. I have a
Micron 512k vga card and SI sees VGA with 256k. However, my card works well
using 600X800 256k colors. It also supports 1024X768 16k colors. So, I know
all is well.

As far as windows is concerned I dont know if 386 mode will work completely
with your SX though it definitely works with a DX system. Someone else may
be able to help you with that.

I have a similar SuperVGA board, it has a Western Digital chipset and behaves
almost exactly like a Paradise 1024i (The windows 3.0 drivers for the latter
work on the card without trouble.) The RAM upgrade to 512k required a jumper
to be changed to tell the card that the additional memory was available. The
manual said this in one section, but claimed that it auto-detected it in a
different section. If this is the same card under a different label (mine
is a "Candor") the manual may be flawed in the same way. Unfortunately,
my card (and the manual) are both at home, so I can't tell you the specifics.

MS-Windows 3.0 runs just fine in '386 extended mode on a '386sx box. If it
didn't, there would be MAJOR problems with the '386sx chip, which is supposed
to be completely software compatible.

I hope this helps...
