There's been lots of talk recently about the access times of the new disks. Those of you, like myself, who bought their hard disks back when <30ms was very good might be starting to feel neglected. What I've done is to ignore these speeds and instead of being tempted to buy a superfast disk I bought more memory and a good disk cache program (PC-KWIK) instead. With a disk cache of 6 megabytes it doesn't really make a whole lot of difference how slow my hard disk is (within reason) since I access it so seldom. With PC-KWIK I'm getting hit rates of at least 85% doing the kind of stuff I do. But, if you do have some extra money and you do want to upgrade your system I recommend (after buying the memory and disk cache) buying a bigger disk, one that might not be the fastest. It probably won't cost as much as a flash disk but you won't notice the speed, only the capacity. ---- Anything you read here is my opinion and in no way represents Sybase, Inc.
