Hi, I was wondering if someone could give me more details about the advantages and disadvantages (and any other info) about the native and translation modes of the Seagate ST157A hard disk. I'm using an AT system (12 MHz) with an ST157, currently configured as a 7 head drive, 733 cylinders, 17 sectors per track, write precompensate 300. Just to see if there were any speed differences I decided to configure the drive in native mode i.e. 6 heads, 560 tracks, 26 sectors per track wpcom 0. In fact the speed of the drive was very slightly slower (using the Checkit hard disk benchmark) than in translation mode. Can anyone explain the reason for this? The benchmark values I got were: Ave. access time track to track search transfer rate native 27.5ms 8.1ms 403.8k/s xlation 27.5ms 1.1ms 415.8k/s Please email responses to me. I'll post a summary if there is a lot of interest. Thanks, Geoff Rehmet. -- =============================================================================== Geoff Rehmet, Botha House, |Internet : csgr@alpha.cs.ru.ac.za Private Bag 1028, |uucp : ..uunet!m2xenix!quagga!alpha!csgr Grahamstown, 6140, RSA +----------------------------------------------
