[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] MULTISYNC vs EGA

SOCGKHR@BYUVM.BITNET (02/25/91)

I bought a TVM "Dual Sync" monitor that runs either straight CGA or straight
EGA. Somehow it can figure out what sweep frequency it is receiving and
adjust itself accordingly.

To drive the monitor I bought a Packard Bell (SBS TECHNOLOGY EGAPLUS) card.
The problem is that the PB card has an "autoEGA" rom. This wonderful
feature is supposed to be able to figure out if the monitor is a straight EGA
or multisync. Well it thinks my monitor is a multisync (which it is not) and
tries to send a menagerie of sweep frequencies that my simple minded
"dual sync" doesn't understand.

What is the difference in the pinout of a multisync and a straight EGA
monitor? What do these cards do to decide what momnitor is hooked to
them? Is there any trick that will force the card to do straight EGA?
(The card has no jumpers or setup software that allow you to force EGA).

Any information about this problem or any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
