[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Soundblaster question

santeew@dogmatix.cs.uoregon.edu (John Wes Santee) (01/03/91)

Hi netland!

I know that a lot of questions/comments come up about the Soundblaster Music
card on the net. All of the praise that it has gotten has made me very
interested because my MPU-401 just died on me.

I have just one (well, maybe two or three) questions though. First and
foremost, is the MIDI interface MPU-401 compatible if you buy the MIDI box for
it? If not, does anyone know it Cakewalk 4.0 supports it now that Twelve
Tone is supporting a wider range of interfaces? Also, what are some of the
better prices that you have seen it for. I've seen it for $149 (+ S&H) mail
order. I know that doesn't include the MIDI box so I'd like to know about
prices on that also.

E-mail is fine.

Thanks!

I'm planning on buying a Soundblaster Card soon and was wondering:

My brother owns a Mac II, and with it, can program the error messages
that appear to play any digitized sound.

       Computer crash: bomb exploding
       Disk eject: cannon firing
Warning: "Lost in Space" robot saying "Warning! Warning!"
        etc.

Can this be done on the PC with Windows or OS/2 using the Soundblaster's
digital sampling ability?

I mostly want the Soundblaster for the MIDI, but thought this would
be fun.

Voyetra has released a reduced version of their Voyetra Professional Music prog
ram that will run with the SB. It's bundled with the MIDI adapter for $99. I
don't know how good it is, or the features they left out. BTW, Sierra On-Line
will use the SB DAC to handle voices and the Roland unit to handle musical scor
es for their CD-ROM games packages. They have planned a complete package w/ th
e SB, Roland, CD-ROM drive and 3 games (SQ4, KQ5 & Mother Goose)

                                                 A.P.

p.s. This is a good reason to get an SB... These new games should be spectacula
r.

I heard somewhere that SB would soon come out with a industry standard
version.

The 'reduction' is that while recording MIDI, you can only play already
recorded tracks with SB internal voices :-(

I suppose that by 'Roland unit' he means MT-32 or so. Yes, SB is and will be
very well supported in games, first because it is AdLib compatible. But the
requester wanted mainly its MIDI interface. Even if all the music packages
get adapted, it will still be one-way-at-a-time.
