[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Using SVGA Modes on VGA Monitor

Robert_Bell@mindlink.UUCP (Robert Bell) (02/23/91)

Hi Brian, I use a vga moniter with a trident 8800 board with 512k memory so by
rights I should be able to do 640 * 480/256 but I am unable.After a lot of
phone calls to tech lines I managed to find that the vga moniter uses a
horizontal frequency of 31.4 khz and inorder to display 256 colours at 640 *
480 resolution you need a horizontal frequency of approximately 29 khz. so if
you use a driver for 256 colours the moniter is unable to sync to the
horizontal frequency and you get a totally unreadable screen, hope that helps
you and if anyone else knows otherwise, then please let us know as i would
certainly like to be able to use 256 colour mode.

I have a Princeton PSC-28 VGA color monitor (fixed frequency). I also
have a Paradise 16/Plus 256K card. Now, the card will go as high as
640x400x256 colors and the monitor can handle this mode just fine.
Now, I can't afford to switch my monitor AND my card, so what I would
like to do is upgrade my video card to something like an ET4000 1MB
card. I know that I my monitor will not exceed 640x480, but will I
be able to do 640x480x256 colors? Then LATER I can get a new monitor.

Actually, most "good" cards and monitors will support 256 colors
at 640x480. The trident is the only card I've seen that won't
do it. I've had no problems with my ZCM-1492 (fixed frequency)
VGA and my STB PowerGraph VGA.

I've got the Trident 8800 chip set and 512k ram but still can't get 256 colours
in 640 * 480 on a standard vga monitor. All I get is a lot of wavy lines and not
much else ,explain that!wavy lines

Yes. The timings my Trident 8900 produces in 256 colors mode are different
from the 16 colors mode ones. My multisync needs to be adjusted to
display the image in the same place. In 256 color modes image tend to be lower.

Could someone explain the reason?

Actually, your card can also do 800x600 in 16 colors. If your monitor can
also handle this mode, then you should have no problem keeping the monitor
and upgrading to an ET4000 (below).  The number of colors is not important;
the number of pixels is what counts.
