My wife an I visited the Hawiian Islands (4) in 1977 and had a great time.
Our favorite place, though, was a toss up between Lahaina, Maui and Kona, Hawaiiso here goes;
I don't know how much is still the same (hotels and restaurants go from good
to bad sometimes) but we loved the Hilton in Kona for accomadations.
For food, we especially enjoyed the Spindrifter and the King Kamahamaha hotel
restaurant; the salad bars are usually loaded with super-fresh vegetables
and the entrees are excellent. Almost all the restaurants serve their own
freshly baked bread and we found the prices on par with East Coast restaurants.

We regretably missed seeing the City of Refuge but heard it is a must-see.
We also heard from several people that a drive to the Parker Ranch is a must
since they apparently have great cuisine as well as the world's largest
cattle ranch.

If you can spend the time to drive or fly to Hilo (East Coast of Hawaii)
the Volcanoes Park is very interesting and the nearby Falls (Rainbow and
Akaka) are worth the trip; try to go on one of the few sunny days that Hilo
gets -- while Kona is almost always sunny Hilo is almost rainy.
