[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Cylinder mapping ?

schoi@rodan.acs.syr.edu (S. Choi) (03/01/91)

I have a RLL hard drive which has more than 1024 cylinders. I've heard
that there is a controller that uses special mapping so that I can
map more heads and less cylinders.

Could anybody tell me which controller can do this mapping ?

Apparently my controller (OEM version of WD1006-SR2) cannot do
  this mapping function.

If I mapped those extra cylinders to ghost heads, then will SpinRite or
Norton Disk Doctor run flawlessly ?

   Thanks.

I believe disk optimizers and fixers like DI or Mace Remedy/Unfrag
will work, but the Spinrite manual mentions that controllers which
fool the machine into thinking its got fewer sectors/more cylinders
are incompatible with it (or the other way around..) 8-)

We managed to trash the second partition on a 60 Meg Priam drive
which used EDVR.SYS with Spinrite....

Be careful with it.

It's called "sector translation."

The Adaptec 2372A or B (or C, now?) does it just fine.

Right.

Dunno' anout SpinRite, but NDD is unaware of anything "strange" with the
drive and works just fine.

Your welcome...
