[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] CTS/RTS support on COM ports

km@mathcs.emory.edu (Ken Mandelberg) (03/08/91)

How does the software/hardware support for CTS/RTS flow control work on
DOS? Is it up to the application to actually do the flow control, or
can the application tell the driver to do it?

Is there a way to get at least partial support for CTS/RTS external to
the program? For example, while I think doing flow control on incoming
data is inherently a software issue for the DCE (drop RTS if you can't
buffer any more data), outgoing flow control is more a hardware issue
for the DCE. The UART on the DCE can told not to transmit (and thus not
go ready) unless it sees CTS from the DTE.

It seems to me you should be able to enable output hardware flow
control with a setup program or a jumper on the board.
