[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] SoundBlaster vs AdLib

daneman@czech.sw.mcc.com (Michael Daneman) (02/26/91)

Let me get this straight once and for all. Can AdLib play digitized
speach or do you need SB for that. I know that AdLib does not have a
microphone input, but does it not do digitized sound either?

Thanks,
-Mike.

SB has a 8-bit digital voice output channel (and also 8-bit input), Adlib does
not have it (Adlib does not have STEREO too, even if you want to pay
$20 for the optional chip!).

But there is no stereo on the SB either, except for sounds produced with
the 2 now optional CM/S chips.

I have an utility to play digitized sounds on a straight AdLib. But it is
only a limited demo/advertisement.

As a matter of fact, what is that optional $20 chip for the AdLib?

I found this utility on a local BBS.
I could put it on some ftp site, but want that someone uploads a
midifile to .rol or to .cmf converter (or an internal-fm-voice midifile
player) first.

I've been following this group for a while and I finally made up my mind to
buy the Sound Blaster. I will have my Sound Blaster installed by next week.
I am wondering could somebody please tell me some FTP addresses so that I can
get some sound files or utilities for my Sound Blaster? Thank you very
much!

I just heard that there will be a new SB that will have a standard MIDI
interface. Also, there will be a new sound board called the Audioware Board
coming SOON that is SB compatible and cost $199 (retail) only. Does anyone
know WHEN will they be on the market? I am asking this is because I am
planning to buy the SB next week. Should I wait for the new boards or it really
doesn't matter? I want to buy the SB mostly is becasue I want better sound
for my games. How important the MIDI interface to me as a game player? Could
anybody give me some idea? PLEASE?

To find out all the info you want about this new soundboard, call
Leading Technologies at 1-800-999-5323. I called them a month ago
and asked them all about it. The new board will be packaged with
two small speakers and will retail for about $270 (can't remember
the exact price). The street (mailorder) price would then be
around $160 (???)--in other words about the same price as the
SB.

I asked Leading Tech. what the new board will do, and he said it
will do anything the Soundblaster will do, including the digitized
voice stuff, and it also comes with the Voxkit. I don't think it
does anything MORE than what the soundblaster does, and I don't
know whether it comes with CMS chips.

Anyway, after speaking the Leading Tech's rep, I came to the
conclusion that it is basically just a soundblaster, and that
Leading Tech just wants to get part of the lucrative market that
SB has gotten.

If it means anything to you, I just mailordered a soundblaster
a couple days ago for $149--that was my decision. There are
several places in Computer Shopper that have it for $149.

>How important the MIDI interface to me as a game player?

As for as I know, NO game uses the MIDI interface. You need to
buy MIDI software (as well as the MIDI adapter if you have a
SB) in order to use the MIDI. Don't worry about MIDI as far as
games go. Just worry about which sound card is the MOST SUPPORTED
by the games. (The SB is the most supported since it is totally
Adlib compatible AND does more.)

BTW, the soundblaster is NOT compatible with much of the MIDI stuff
out there. I would NOT buy the SB if you're planning on getting
into MIDI in any serious way--it's a waste of money. Buy the SB
for your games and for the digitizing features.

It could sample at 23 instead of 12 KHz max. With a SB you cannot
equal a Mac Recorder yet.

After having discovered that CMS are just Philips SAA 1099, I started
to think that maybe other SB components are fairly standard and
Creative Labs are just assembling them, providing a PC bus interface,
etc. Why do they stick paper sheets over some chips on the board?
Stealing the market of a company who didn't put much effort into R&D
doesn't bother me (*Creative* Labs... hahaha :-)

One of the demos I downloaded from sequent.mcs.kent.edu has the MT-32
option (I think it was Test Drive 3). Anyway, I suppose it expects a
NORMAL midi interface, even if it supports SB. I am not a big game
user and there are some many ones on the market...

%% buy MIDI software (as well as the MIDI adapter if you have a

As for the MIDI adapter, you can do it yourself with $5.

I did it! I finally did it! I have the SB installed in my AT! I love it! It is
GREAT! I didn't think IBM compatibles can do something like this....Well, that
might be because I am in North Dakota...;-)
Since Creative Labs charge $29.95 for the C/MS chips, and that SAA 1099 equals
the C/MS chips, how and where can I get the SAA 1099? Or Could I get the C/MS
chips from somewhere else than Creative Labs for a better price? Thanks!!
Thanks you net people for leading me to this Quarter Free Arcade!!

Not exactly what you think you want, but..

RUN, do not walk, but RUN!! to your favorite software store and
purchase the WING COMMANDER game. This has got to be the finest
available piece of software for taking advantage of the SoundBlaster.

Well, ok.. so I'm addicted. :)

As far as I know, games by Sierra (Larry, Police Quest etc)
support the Roland MPU-401 and MT-32 sound module
    combination.

One alternative for buying MIDI+sound module would be to buy
the Roland LAPC-1 board, which incorporates MIDI and
MT-32/CM-32L modules on one AT board.
