[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] SCSI drives equal?

hpasanen@cs.hut.fi (Harri Pasanen) (03/08/91)

Are all the SCSI drives created equal when it comes to compatability with
software (DOS, UNIX, etc.)?

So if I get an Adaptec SCSI controller, does it matter who's SCSI drive I
use - Conner, Quantum, etc?

How about speed? Is SCSI significantly slower/faster than IDE from the
same manufacturer? Has anybody experience with Quantum drives?

Please e-mail responces,

Thank's

Couldn't find you in my maps, so..... SCSI drives are anything but equal.
You could take the specs and lay them out side by side and find two
drives that carried the same specs, but performed radically different
in the real world.

I have talked to this particular subject in comp.periphs.scsi in quite some
detail, but if your interest is performance, here is a list of the
manufacturers I have used/tested and the order is in highest performance
first.

Imprimis/CDC (not the Seagate stuff, but the real OK City stuff)
Quantum
Maxtor/Fujitsu (pretty much a wash here)
Conner (not including the CP340/3100, a couple of dogs)
Seagate/Rodime (how slow can you go)
