[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Looking into a Perstor 180-16FN drive controller

opr_fowler@mcis2.enet.dec.com (John Fowler) (03/08/91)

I'd like some opinions on the Perstor 180-16FN drive controller
preferable from people who are using it in their machines.

I have a 286 with a single Maxtor XT2190 hard drive getting 159mb

Where is the best place to buy this controller from and for how much?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I bought one in Aug/1990 from Hard Drives International for US $199.

It works great on my Miniscribe 3650, and even on my (unsupported) PRIAM 185.

In your case, the Maxtor 2190 listed as a "compatible" drive, and using all
1224 cylinders you'd get a capacity of 291Meg instead of 159Meg. This comes
at the expense of having to put up with reduced throughput, since they do not
do any on-card buffering .. best interleave is 3:1, althought since there
are more sectors per track, this works out to be equivalent to about 2:1 MFM.
