Check into going to Lake Louise in the Canadian Rockies (Alberta) for skiing. The area is among the most beautiful in the world. Why go to the Alps to see mountains when you can see these? How about the Grand Canyon? I don't know when snow appears on the North Side but it is supposed to look spectacular. I sympathise with your concern about crowds and costs. Canada is always a good bet since most Americans know nothing about it and the dollar is really strong there. What I find surprising is that even the cheapest hotels are nice, whereas here they are fleabags. Scott Pector
