[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Sound Blaster on PS/2 50

winata@cat1.cs.wisc.edu (Charles Winata) (03/11/91)

I only wanted to ask some question concerning SB.
The usual SB that runs on ISA mahice, is it compatible with PS/2 50?

I plan to buy IBM compatible soon, in the meantime I would settle with
my roommate's PS/2 50. I would like to hear sounds out of his box and
plan to install SB in his box. That's why I'm wondering about the question
I asked above.

thanks in advance!

No... As you said the SB is for ISA and the PS/2 50 is a microchannel
based machine...

There will be a microchannel version coming out soon though, but I
guess that doesn't help you unless you are going to get a MCA machine
too.

The ISA sound blaster does not work in a PS/2 50 because the PS/2 is MCA. Howe
ver, there is a MCA model due to be released soon.

PS/2 50 is a microchannel machine, not ISA. Hence, all ISA cards will
not work in PS/2 50 (they want $260 for a simple serial port in PS/2 50
as compared to $15 in an AT). However, SB is supposed to have a
microchannel version out this or next month.

Who ARE they, anyway!?! I personally bought a 2 serial/1 par. adapter for
under $100. Many people complain about the Delta$ between AT bus cards
and MCS cards, but I have been watching this price difference continue
to diminish rapidly. The only cards I have NOT seen is 1.) Sound blaster
compatible, and 2.) a MULTIfunction card that includes a game port. But
I've NEVER seen an AT bus card that has that data transfer rate capabilities
of the MCA bus. (just a side note . . )

And just who might 'they' be? Sure, you can generally find boards much
cheaper for the AT bus. However, the price difference between MCA boards and
AT-bus boards has been gradually diminishing; I have now seen single serial
port boards in the $60-70 range and multi-port boards ~$100. I can find a
serial port board for an AT for $15, but the cheapest one I've found I could
trust ran me $35. MCA boards are still too expensive, but then again I've
never had a problem with an MCA board in terms of performance or reliability.
I wish I could say the same for some of the boards I've put in AT-bus
machines :-(

Well, it was more than a year ago...
