[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Old, old, OLD hard drives, like Shugart 712

lane@cs.dal.ca (John Wright/Dr. Pat Lane) (03/20/91)

Well, maybe they're not that old by some standards but...

I have one of these beasts that was working with a Xebec controller
in an old XT. I also have a Miniscribe 212? working with an old Adaptec
controller. I think this stuff was fairly common in the early IBM days.

The Xebec expired and no way can I get this Shugart 212 to talk to
a "normal" XT controller, like an WD1002-X, WDXTGEN or DTK 5150X.
Same thing with the Miniscribe.

Is there some trick or do these old drives/controllers follow a
different standard than the familiar ST402/512/MFM (they use a familiar
looking narrow cable/wide cable hookup).

A Seagate engineer told me, BTW, that the ST402/512 refers to a single
standard - the 402 was the original Shugart controller and the 512 was
the original Shugart hard drive. He couldn't answer my question, however.
And Shugart were no help. Is Xebec or Adaptec still around?

I realize, this drive would make a better boat anchor, but I'm curious.

PS: Please e-mail your response, even if you post it as well...I could
easily miss it in the avalanche of news. Thanks.
