[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Selecting boot device -- is it possible?

Please pardon me if this is obvious, but I'm just getting into PCs.  Is there
such a thing as a PC which allows specifying the default drive from which to
boot?  How about specifying a drive for this boot only?  I'm especially
interested in the case where the hard drive(s) are SCSI.

While I'm at it, how exactly does the PC boot process work?  (RTFM is fine,
as long as you name the FM.)
