[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] Moving drives from XT to AT machine...

mcrw@hobbit.gandalf.ca (Mark Woodward) (03/21/91)

Hi,
I'm having a small problem.... I just got a 8Mhz AT mother board and I
want to move my XT cards over. Most work fine (EGA, MODEM, SERIAL) but the
problems start with the drives. The floppy is way out to lunch, the diags
give me a time of 4000 when it should be closer to 2000, I know this
is a lost cause and I'll get an AT floppy controller.
The real pain is my hard drives.... the controller is an WD1002 27X
the drives are a 30 meg RLL and 120 meg MFM (never had a problem with the mix
in the XT). Now these are installed in the AT (sans floppy) and booted,
everything is OK. I spin up the BBS and leave.... somewhere along the line
the disk gets accessed and dos returns 'drive not ready... abort etc'
I've played around with it and seen it happen, the MFM is an older drive
and once in a while it has to retry a seek (the old bzzt-bzzzt trick) when
this happens on the AT it fails first try.
I need a solution, the best would be to get this setup working but if
I have to get a new controller will I still be able to mix the drives
and get the full 30 meg out of the RLL drive and if I do it means the pain
of putting it all on floppys to reformat the drives.
So does anyone have any sugestions?
Thanks,

P.S. Maybe the mother board is screwed? I know that it loses the time but not
the date and config when it's powered off. Know of any real good mother board
exercisers?
