The problem with this 'game' (easy to see), that it's impossible,
that everybody would win. The game goes around in the country, and
while there are new participants, there is no problem, the very
early participants really get the $50,000. The problem starts when
practically everybody is involved to this game, and there is no new
player. At this time the game dies out, and the last players don't
get back anything.
Conclusion: In this 'game' millions of people (the last players)
pay money ($1) to only thousands of people (the early birds), so
the early birds really get thousands of bucks, but all the others
only lose.
That's why I don't like this thing even if I would be an early
player. I'm just sick of the idea to collect others bucks, when
they don't know the background of the game.

Is there anything we can do about this kind of abuse of the USENET ?

Hear, hear! Bandwidth should NOT be wasted for moronic drivel like this.
Furthermore, not only is this immoral, but chain letters (that is what that
post was) are ILLEGAL. Is anyone policing this system? Freedom of information
exchange should NOT extend to attempting to carry on con games on the Net.
	Etc., etc.

The one thing I have difficulty figuring out, is why would any of the
poor schmucks whotake part in this put there name down as number
10? why not cross out #5 and put your name there?

The last time I saw this was in jobs.misc.jobs. But that time (and the
one before and the one before....) it was from a student. That was
easy. Send mail to the students postmaster and that (at least I heard)
took care of it. ie: offensive idiot lost his account.

This guy appears from the posting header to work for a private company.
Maybe his postmaster cares, maybe not. Maybe he is the postmaster...
no one knows. If there was some way to alert his employer to the waste
of bandwidth he has caused on company time, maybe the employer would
take some sort of action.

Personally I sent him a copy of his own post with a rather pointed
question at the top:

	"Are you a total idiot?"

Maybe if everyone sends him this sort of mail he'll get the message.
maybe it'll overflow somebody's disk...

Yes indeed. Send mail to root@mwk, and complain that one of their
users has been promoting illegal activities, and doing it in a way
blatantly contrary to network guidelines.

A back of the envelope calculation:

If your name is in slot 10, and you mail 100 letters with 10% response,
and everyone else does the same, you will get 10^11 dollars. 10 from the
ones that respond to you, 10*10 from the ones that respond to the 10 that
responded from you ...

If you put your name in slot 5, you will get only 10^6 dollars, since
your name will pop off the top quicker.

At the extreme, put your name in slot 1. You get ten dollars, and then
your name pops off the top of the list.

Now, if we assume that the system will work, this is also a reason NOT
to put your name in slot 10, your wife in slot 9, your kids in slot 8, etc.
You get more in the beginning, but since the return is exponential and you
are stopping sooner, you get less overall. If you know the system will not
run to completion, then you SHOULD put spouse in 9, etc.

YES
1. spend a dime and findout the # of the company this CLOWN was calling from
2. Call and talk to their Personnel manager. Tell this person what
is being done. Electronic Mail Fraud is not Leagal! Be careful to
explain, in general terms, the size of USENET/INTERNET/etc..
3. Send them a copy of the message via FAX if possible.

If these CLOWNS are stomped on as they appear they will stop showing up. I
firmly believe WE must police the use of the net space ourselves or someone
will do it for us. This type of !@#$%^&* is just the excuse some empire-
building burea!@#$%^&*(crat will use to regulate us.

Geometric progression. The lower down on the list you start, the more
you theoretically get back. In fact if you put yourself at the top
of the list you only get back $1 for each person you send it to.

Of course, the lower down you are the more chance of running out of
stupid people before your name gets to the top but there doesn't
seem to be much danger there.

This is not the right newsgroup to discuss this. Follow-up to
misc.consumers.

Hehehe.. maybe its because by the time you'd get to #1
there haven't been as many "generations"? So you'd get
less? Come to think of it, why not extend the list to
100 and put your name all the way down there? Even bet-
ter: put your name in all the spots from 5-10. Mail it
to yourself five times if your conscience bothers you..

8-)

Oh yes.. I suppose you'd better give yourself a dollar
each time you do so..
