Dave, Have I got a suggestion for you!!! Just what you need for your trip! THE MILEPOST! Now I can hear you saying to yourself, "What in the world do I do with a milepost? After all, it's just a stick with a piece of metal with a number on it." Well, you're right, but I have another kind of MILEPOST. "The MILEPOST" calls itself "the only all-the-north travel guide." In fact, that is correct. It covers all roads (I really mean it; anything that can be even remotely called a road is included) in the upper 2/3 of Alberta and British Columbia, and all of Alaska, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories! It tells where everything (hotels, motels, campgrounds, side roads, scenery, towns, cabins, houses, dogs, you name it) to the nearest tenth of a mile. Further, it tells you about EVERY town along the way in gory detail (every community, even those that are very remote or small, in these regions advertises in the MILEPOST). Also, the MILEPOST tells you about various books and magazines and journals about the NORTH, about climate changes throughout the year, about terrain changes as the miles roll by, about how to prepare to go on such a journey, i.e., along the ALCAN highway (gravel for a long ways), warns you about mosquitos (big problem up north; when it's nice enough to go (i.e., July or August), the bugs are biting since it's the only time of year they can live!), and tells you about ferry and cruise ship services running along Washington state, British Columbia, and Alaska! The MILEPOST is updated every year. It costs about $12 and you can order it from the Alaska Northwest Publishing Company Box 4-EEE Anchorage, Alaska 99509 Write them or call them and make sure you get the 1984 (not 1983) edition. Last year's edition cost $11.95 plus $1 fourth class postage (or $3 for first class postage and handling). By the way, it also has air schedules, and fishing, rockhound, and flower guides. You must get it; it also tells about laws and regulations up there as well as travel necessities. There are about 500 pages of worthwhile information in it, so don't make a mistake by being cheap! I got mine another way; I ordered it from the: Banff Book and Art Den 110 Banff Ave. P.O. Box 1420 Banff, Alberta T0L 0C0 1-403-762-3919 I don't know when the 1984 edition is available, so you should check first. Scott Pector P.S. I wish I was going. My wife and I are going in about 3 years from now when she finishes her Residency program. We figure that 4 weeks is about right for the trip (possibly 3-3 1/2 is adequate).
