[comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware] more memory on PS/2

tgp@sei.cmu.edu (Tod Pike) (04/05/91)

I have an IBM PS/2 30-286 (yeah, I know, but it was cheap). Right now it has
1 meg of memory in 4 256k SIMMS on the mother board. I want to expand the
memory, but I have heard conflicting opinions on how I can do this.

The local IBM shop told me I'd have to get a memory expansion board (at an
outragous price). An IBM salesperson said, no, I'd just have to buy some
1 Meg SIMMS and replace the 256K ones on the mother board. Well, buying the
SIMMS was cheaper, so I got a couple of 1Megx9 80 nanosecond SIMMS and went
at it. What I ran into was that the system refused to recognize the new
memory no matter where I put it on the board (there are only 4 slots, after
all).

I was wondering if anyone out there has the definitive answers: Can I put
1Meg SIMMS in my 30-286? Which slots are the correct ones? And, as long as
I have your attention, how do I run the CMOS setup program to update the CMOS
information on how much memory is in the system?

Please mail directly to me, I'll summarize if anyone is interested. Thanks!
